How voice assistants can change the game for Fleet

In 2010, the almost inconceivable amount of €6.8 Trillion was spent on the transport of humans and goods worldwide, amounting to almost €1000 per person on the planet. Not all of these humans and goods are delivered by fleets, but it’s fair to assume that the majority of this expenditure will be connected in some way to fleets and their drivers. I recently talked to a senior manager with a leading truck OEM in Europe. They want to make their driver work spaces more attractive in the future: “Like an airplane”.

The reason is simple: given the enormous amount of people and goods being transported, the job of a driver must remain attractive. Some of these roles will fall away with a growing amount of autonomous vehicles, but this will take another 10–15 years, and secondary tasks will still be performed with human oversight.

The job of a driver is stressful: drivers are constantly subjected to the risk of losing their license, and with this, their job.

One specific recurring event in which drivers are placed under excessive stress is during the last mile delivery in dense urban areas. The causes are numerous: hectic traffic, changing destinations and schedules, clear communication with both recipients and dispatchers, the management of multiple different digital devices. The risk is high for drivers to fail and cause potentially serious accidents, in turn increasing the risk of efficiency KPIs suffering and insurance premiums rising.

If there is one use case where voice AI can make an instant impact, it’s for professional drivers. The professional use case archetype will have less interest in asking the assistant to tell a joke or read the weather forecast, but will instead require a seamless touch-free communication interface with their customer, or having a smart interface to the CRM to learn more about their next meeting or mission:

For the past three years at German Autolabs, we have concentrated on understanding what drivers do, what their needs are, and where an assistant can help. Our Automotive Voice Assistance platform provides a tool-box to customize specialized voice assistants and to tailor them to individual use cases. Built on exceptional technology with a track record of success and a constantly expanding data archive of in-vehicle usage, our voice products solutions include true hybrid connectivity which negates the need for always-on internet connections, and SAFE, our predictive algorithm for managing notification and interaction delivery.

Our voice AI implementations for fleets are having major impacts on mission-critical efficiency KPIs and creating a better-connected driver, working in less stressful and thus safer conditions.
